True love songs: Jon B. pours his heart into his music, keeping his fans coming back for more

Twenty years later, Jon B. is touring more than ever.

The R&B crooner played more than 100 dates in 2013 and is on track to play a similar number this year.

“I’m touring more now than I was when I had hit singles on the radio,” he says during a recent interview. “I love what I do and to be able to be going this strong so many years later. It’s a blessing.”

Jon B., born Jon Buck, became a staple on the charts in the 1990s beginning with his first single “Someone To Love,” which featured Babyface. During that time, he also had a hit song with Tupac Shakur and a handful of solo hits.

Jon B. never stopped making music and he continues to put out music on his own label. But that’s about to change.

“I’ve been looking to get signed back with a label,” he says. “My wife and I have been doing everything ourselves for years.”

Another reason Jon B. wants to slow down on the business side is that he recently became a father again to a daughter.

“My other daughter is 7 now and my wife and I are doing it all again,” he says. “We want to be there for our children and have made the decision to slow down a little. It’s difficult for my daughters to have both parents pulled away from them keeping my career going.”

While Jon B. searches for a label that will represent him, he says there’s one thing he is looking for.

“I’ve always been true in everything I write,” he says. “I write love songs from the purest part of my heart. That’s been the key to staying around for so long. The fans see that I’m a genuine artist and it’s humbling to me that they have stuck with me.”

Jon B. will be in Rio Rancho performing as part of the R&B Summer Jam alongside K-Ci & JoJo, Dru Hill, Adina Howard and Ginuwine.

“The music from that era has its place in the lives of our fans,” he says. “It’s always great to go back and revisit those times.”
